Summit Assisted Living of Tarzana was an older facility, but it seemed better-taken care of than the other place. Still, it's an older facility. One of the things that turned me off is the entrance. It was like glass doors with glass windows, and the windows were really dirty with fingerprints and stuff. The gentleman that showed us around, was pleasant enough. We asked some questions that we kind of got vague answers to. We just realized that that's not going to be one of the places we would choose. The rooms were comparable to other facilities. They have like acoustical ceilings, which were fine. Also, that area was not the place we wanted, so we decided that we didn't care for that. It's just an older building that also needs some TLC. They have a little patio outdoor area, which seemed fine. It was a nice outdoor with some greenery, trees, and stuff.

My mom was in Summit Assisted Living of Tarzana. The first year when it had a different owner, it was wonderful. After that, things started to go downhill. It changed hands at the end of February or beginning of March, but we weren't informed about that until June. The staff treated her like a bother. I don't know what the food is like at Summit, but I know that she wouldn't eat it. The room was never cleaned, and then when we went to pack things up, there were things that were missing, clothes that weren't hers. And when she went in, every piece of clothing that was in there had a new tag on it. She had that many things in her home, so some of the things were really quite nice and they were missing. They raised the prices so much that the prices were raised in January, and then Summit raised them again in June. And for what we were paying, it wasn't OK.
There was a lack of communication. I had asked to be a part of the care plan, and I was never called. She fell two times and they neglected to say that. Also, when they transferred her, the information was totally fictitious. My mom does not weigh 130 pounds, she's closer to 200 pounds. They said it was a one person, moderate assist. It's not, it's a three-person assist. So I'm very disappointed in the fact that they actually lied like a boldfaced lie on a Zoom meeting to the facility head of the other place, myself, my husband, the nurse, and my mom. It was just totally not true. And that was very disappointing because that meant that she could not stay at the other place.

We liked it the best out of all the places we toured because it had the nicest rooms and all of the amenities that we were looking for. The dining rooms were beautiful and had 24-hour access to food and snacks. They had an activity room, game nights, ice cream socials, movies, and transportation if they wanted to go to movies or shopping malls. There were a lot of positive aspects to it. We toured a number of times with our family members, and everybody agreed that it was the best place.

I like the location. The staff was competent. We didn't look at the activities, because my mother-in-law is not very active. I saw their dining room, and it looked OK. The atmosphere was homey.
