I toured The Homestead at Maplewood. The place was clean and inviting. Everyone we encountered during the tour seemed friendly, and that included staff and residents. I would have liked to see a little more than just a kitchenette, maybe a range and a full fridge and a sink in the units. I know they had activity rooms, exercise rooms, a game room, a TV room, and a living room. It was all good.

We went to The Homestead at Maplewood. They have friendly staff. They do have some activities. I can't remember exactly what, but for the people who can, like assisted living, or independent living, they arrange activities outside of the building, like going out to eat or going somewhere else off the premises. They will take people elsewhere for a group outing. The rooms were very nice, very clean, and well kept up. They paint them. The bathrooms are nice and they have a private bathroom as well. The shower, you could tell, is definitely for older people. It's small, it has a little built-in seat that they could sit down on if they wanted to while taking a shower. The dining area is nice in both assisted living and memory care. It's not as new as the other ones we saw, the dining area is smaller, otherwise, it was fine. They have bird aviaries, like a giant enclosed area that has little birds in it, and people can sit and watch the birds. It seems they liked that quite a bit.

When my grandmother and uncle made the decision to go to The Homestead at Maplewood, I was so sad because I thought this meant a long decline in their health and lifespan. I was so wrong! They thrived! My brother and I were reminded of our college dorm-life experiences, which were very pleasant. Everyone had their own private spaces. The community areas were inviting. The staff was incredibly pleasant, helpful and cheerful! My father spent the last months of his life with hospice care at the Homestead and again, we experienced caring attention. I will be forever grateful for the care my loved ones received, especially since I do not live in the Midwest and couldn’t visit as much as I would have liked. I knew they were in caring, capable hands.

My dad spent the last year of his life at the Homestead of Maplewood assisted living. He was 95 and had a lot of health issues and was blind from macular degeneration when he moved in there. It was very difficult for him to move from his home in northern Minnesota, but he needed to be closer to my sister and me, especially in the winter. It turned out to be a great move for him. He got along well with the staff, who were super kind and friendly. He liked the informal atmosphere. The Homestead offered lots of social activities, and my dad enjoyed those, but he also appreciated that he could just hang out by himself without being pressured to participate. He liked the food and also liked that good coffee was always available. My sister and I especially appreciated that all the staff treated our dad as a person, not as a number, and it was clear that the staff saw the Homestead as a mission of service to others. I was in charge of my dad’s financial arrangements, and I really liked the transparency and attention to detail on billings for the various services at the facility.

My sister has moved into The Homestead at Maplewood. The staff has been there in average of about eight years, so they work together really well. There is not a lot of turnover. It is very home-like. It is not like a big beautiful fancy hotel; it is like a home. The food is home-cooked. It reminds me of a dorm but it is home-cooked comfort food. Nothing is super fancy, but it is all very homey. Everybody is wonderful, very welcoming, and extremely caring. They have lots of activities. They go on outings, they go on scenic drives, and they go out to eat. They are close to Mapelwood Mall, too. They have movies and bingo. Their activities director is really good.

We choose to move my mom into Assisted Living at the Homestead of Maplewood. The care has been very good. Both management and the caregivers are warm, friendly and caring. My mom is in a 1 bedroom apartment She was at first very sad to downsize from her previous home, but she has adjusted well. I would highly recommend this facility.

Homestead at Maplewood is an older building. I felt their prices were extremely high for what they have to offer. All of their apartments were very, very small. Studio was the biggest they had. It's a cozy feel, but more of a nursing home type feel. They run a special for lunch and for dinner. But if the clients don't want the special, they always have the option to order off of the menu. I thought they were as high dollar, but I didn't feel they had the quality there that the others have.
