About This Community

Peoples Retirement Community opened its doors in 1988. The idea of Pastor Owen Shackett (of Peoples Church) and his wife Betty saw a need for retirement living in this community. Originally designed for independent living, the need for an assisted living quickly became apparent and began slowly admitting residents requiring assistance. A few years later resulted in the first floor, the east wing being remodeled to accommodate memory care.

Peoples Retirement Community provides options for our seniors for Independent living, Assisted Living, and Dementia Care.

Mary
We went to the People's Retirement Community. She showed us the independent and the assisted living areas. It was very nice, it was clean, and they seemed pretty organized. They had activities for the residents while still observing social distancing. It's an older building, but it was clean. I would be happy with it. The staff seemed very knowledgeable. I think she may have been there for a while, she knows what's going on, and she's very pleasant and open to questions. We looked at a one-bedroom, and she explained how the single rooms are set up. It was very nice and very well done. They have a really nice lunchroom, the menus seemed great, they had a movie going in the activity room, and it seemed pretty large and very accessible.

I was shown a 1-bedroom at Peoples Retirement Community, and it was a good size. I was very impressed with it. They showed me all around the place, and I was very impressed with the warmth and the friendliness of the staff. A couple of people walked by (just people that worked there in some capacity), and they're very friendly and stood up and said hello. The lady who showed me around was very, very friendly and warm. She took a lot of time with us and answered all our questions. It just felt very homey there. However, I was a little bit disappointed with the outside because I didn't see a place to walk safely or somewhere to sit and gather. I didn't really think it was that warm and friendly.

The Community Relations Director is awesome and it shows that she cares about the residents and their families. The staff have gone beyond to try and make my mom's transition a good experience. Years prior to my mom moving there, my mom didn't drive and was pretty much homebound unless I took her somewhere. My mom has lived in the facility for about a month. During this time she has been attending most activities and interacting with the residents. According to the oncologist, my mom's time on this earth should be over soon so it warms my heart to see her experience a little bit of life outside her home and the hospital before that day comes. So far, I can say that this experience has been a blessing and I have no complaints.

This place has a good vibe, and it’s nice to see folks enjoying their lobby like it’s their own home (even if they fall asleep). My mother moved in about a year ago and the staff was helpful and knowledgeable leading up to and during the move. My mom loves the bingo, spelling contests, and she always has activities she invites us to, that she’s excited about. It’s good to see her enjoying people and activities.

I stayed at Peoples Retirement Community for about five months. They were mostly retired, and they didn't have a lot going on for anybody that was my age. It was assisted living, so they had a nurse on duty and a doctor, and most of the people just kind of sit around and go to sleep. I had a one-bedroom apartment, which was nice. The food was good, and you're assigned a table in the dining room. The staff were really friendly. They should have more activities for people that are my age. I'm 61, and most of the people there were 70 and 80. It's a good community for people with disabilities.

We move my brother to People's Retirement Community and we choose it because my brother has dementia issues. One of the things that I appreciate is that my brother is under VA medical and People's Retirement will provide transportation if I am not able to. Everybody has been very nice so far and we haven't had any issues with them at all.
