My father-in-law was a resident there for nearly a decade. While it is true that many of the residents sat and watched television, there probably wasn't much else they could do. For example, my father-in-law was a victim of muscular sclerosis and couldn't move hardly at all towards the end of his life. He had to be moved in and out of bed, the shower and the toilet. He stayed in a specially designed wheel chair that allowed him to sit in a semi-reclined position. He had to fed by staff. The staff did this incredibly difficult work for all those years. In the end, when he passed away, the staff was heart-broken. Even in his debilitated condition, the workers showed such compassion … so, yes, some could possibly do more exercise, but that may not be the most important thing.

The Philanthropia Adult Family Home provides assisted living services for several senior citizens. The small number of people makes it possible for residents, staff, and visitors to get to know each other on a personal basis, for a more friendly atmosphere. Staff go out of their way to involve visitors with others in pleasant and interesting conversation. Residents have access to large screen televisions, one or two books, and interactions with the people who come: visitors as well as staff, sometimes including children. The home offers delicious food to residents and visitors. Unfortunately, residents have access to physical hygiene only once a week, and sometimes they smell unpleasant. The single staff person on duty has multiple tasks to complete and does not involve individual residents in stimulating activities. When physical exercise would be more convenient with the help of more than one person, nothing is done to see that a resident gets any exercise. Evidence of physical injury to residents is met with a lack of staff accountability, transparency, and also an apparent lack of corrective measures.
